I originally bought this toy to "kill time" while we set-up "real" Estes type rockets. But these have completely replaced solid fuel rockets at our house. They are fast to set-up, no electricity, no motors to buy, no igniters to fail, no parachutes to either fail or carry your rocket into the next town. You do trade that great WHOOSH sound for a VERY loud POP at take-off.
The rockets are heavier, so they don't get blown by the wind much. The altitude can get to several hundred feet if you use several discs at once. They are much more fun than solid fuel rockets because you can launch at a spur of the moment. You don't have to go find an open field or remember to check batteries or count engines and igniters. The kids want some fun? Pull the air rockets out of the box, set it up in the driveway and pump away! Over and over and over (you get like 60 launching discs with the kit).
Safety is another reason to like these rockets. No burns, no setting fire to dry leaves, no rockets stuck in power lines, no afternoons searching for a lost rocket.
Another reviewer mentioned "too much work". Yes, you do have to pump the bike pump. Yes, when you use the higher shooting discs it can be hard to pump. But how lazy are you? It's still less work than traditional rockets and you get some exercise.
In conclusion, my kids think this is one of the best toys we own. I tend to agree with them...
