I ran out and got one of these for my nephew to sock away for x-mas when they first came out. At the time, I didn't realize how many different versions of them there were. I chose based on the color scheme. When I got it home, I realized the pre-loaded songs on it and I was like "Whoa!?" More in astonishment than anything. These are prominently offered in the toy aisle at Wal-Mart, meaning they're targeted for kids, but the songs on them are, for the most part, OLD and often lyrically inappropriate songs for children. The short time I was in the store exchanging the one I got for the only one I felt better about the songs for an 8 yr old, it was young kids who were all over these. It COULD be great for them, but why not make them with songs more for them? Put some Jonas Brothers or Taylor Swift songs on at least some of them. But no, it's obvious they went after cheaper copyrights on old songs. I wouldn't even have a problem with old songs, but these? (see below)
Several of the songs on the Paper Jamz: "It's the End of the World as We Know it", "Mississippi Queen", "Smoke On The Water", "Woman", "Aliens Exist", "Turning Japanese", "Devour", "Invincible", "Godzilla", "Machinehead", "Take It To The Limit", "Plowed", "Get Free", "Online", "Helicopter", "Rock Star", "Check Yes Juliet", and "School's Out" by Alice Cooper. The few songs out of all that I thought were the better of the bunch for children are "Hey There Delilah", "All Star", and "My Mariah". But you won't find those 3 songs together on any of the guitars.
There's 3 pre-programmed songs on each guitar, and they're paired where you usually get 1 newer song, an older one, and a REALLY old song. Several of the them I didn't even recognize. I came home to look them up and I am still STUNNED that they think these are songs for children. They appear to be made in Hong Kong, which doesn't help matters at all.
The one guitar (style 9) particularly for girls seemed much better with the songs "One Way or Another", "Middle of The Road", and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot". Thanks probably to the fact of there being fewer women's rock songs from decades ago.
Overall, these should be rated for teens or adults until the makers can make them with appropriate songs for their target audience.
It would be brilliant if they would not only update the songs, but find a way to allow the consumer to pick which 3 songs they want on the guitar.
